Studying at Maynooth - FAQs

Studying at Maynooth is a fantastic experience, but for new students it can take a little while to adapt. Be patient with yourself until you start to settle in, but also do your best to get stuck into your studies from day one, as this will reduce stress down the line. Below are some FAQs to help you get your bearings during your first few weeks.

What’s a Lecture?

Lectures are your main classes which cover theoretical content. It is important to attend these and to do your best to take notes where possible, either digitally or on paper.

What’s a Tutorial?

Tutorials are more focussed classes which may go through case studies or work on applying theoretical learning to practical examples. Tutorials are really helpful for consolidating learning and improving your performance in assessment, and as they involved smaller classes, they are the ideal place to get some extra attention and time to ask questions if you are struggling with a particular topic.

What’s a Lab?

Labs are practical hands-on classes in science subjects, where experiments or other assignment type activities will be carried out. These usually have an important assessment component, and may be graded on attendance, so try not to miss any!

What’s Moodle?

Moodle is the virtual learning environment used in Maynooth. This is where you can access notes from your lectures and tutorials, access and upload assignments, and engage with online learning activities such as quizzes.

Where can I see my Timetable and find my Lecture Halls?

You can access your timetable with the Timetable Viewer tool. (Here is a Guide for using the tool)

To find your lecture halls, take a look at the Campus/Venue Map.

For key term dates, check the Academic Calendar.
