MSU Senate Session 05, Sitting 1: Nov. 09th 2020
All the details of Nov. 09th's sitting of Senate that went on for HOURS!
Well done to all executive officers and senators for sticking through it to get through the large agenda. Delighted to announce our chosen charity of the year & to congratulate those elected to Senate positions.
In a nutshell:
- Senate took 6 hours last night, the longest sitting in Senate history.
- Elections for 8 Senate committees took place.
- Senators robustly critiqued the officer reports.
- We had discussions around the 2020 Climate Bill, name change documentation within MU and MSU communication with the student body.
Key Election Results:
- Election of Speaker - Gavan McLaughlin
- Election of Deputy Chairperson - Niall Daly
- Election of Secretary - Liam Cosgrove
- Election of Vice Secretary - Michaela Waters
- Charity Partner of the Year - The Multiple Sclerosis Society of Ireland
Key Moments:
The Student Senate and Subsidiary Bodies Code of Conduct motion was unanimously passed. This was submitted by Independent Senator Niall Daly. This code of conduct articulates values, commitments and desired behaviour by elected representatives of Senate. It will aid daily decision making and goals.
The MSU President proposed the implementation of the Executive Accountability and Oversight Committee (EOAC), as per the MSU Constitution. This was met with opposition from Senators as it was believed officer report questions should take place during the sitting of the Senate, rather than a separate committee so officers would be accountable in front of the full membership.
