Senate Elections March 2019

webArtboard 1facebook

Maynooth Students' Union (MSU) will be holding elections on Tuesday 12th and Wednesday 13th March to fill a number of Senator positions. Together with the 4 Full-Time and 6 Part-Time Officers officers they form the MSU Senate and play a key role in representing the needs and views of students, overseeing the work of the Union and informing MSU policy. In order to ensure the diverse student population is represented on Senate some of the roles have a particular focus. For example, the Green Campus Senator would represent green issues etc.

McLaughlin, Gavan
Hi everyone, my name is Gavan Mc Laughlin and I'm the current MSU Campus Life Senator. I'm a second year Law and Economics student, and I'm on the committee of the Literary and Debating Society. I've thoroughly enjoyed serving you, the students, as your Campus Life Senator over the past eight months, and I've felt that I've contributed towards meaningful change on campus. For example, I've worked closely with the VP for Welfare and Equality and with other senators to increase the affordability and quality of sanitary products on campus - these plans will be implemented in the coming months. I'm looking for your mandate to continue my work in the Senate - please vote Gavan #1 for Campus Life, and please feel free to talk to me at any time about any campus life related concerns or worries. Thanks!

Hi everyone, I’m a 2nd year student of Sociology and International Development. I hope to represent you all as your Gender Equality Senator. How we experience gender varies a lot depending on our ethnicity, race, age, background, sexuality, or whether we’re able bodied. So, it’s important to me to work with/learn from my fellow senators.

Some Key Issues

Men’s mental health: The suicide rate among young men is very high. I plan to work on a campaign encouraging men to seek support for their mental health, in spite of the stigma that often exists.

Support for carers: We can’t always leave our responsibilities at the door of the lecture hall. I hope to work with the Welfare VP to set up supports for our caregiver students. I see this as a gendered issue because women are more likely to take on caring roles. However, all students would of course be more than welcome to avail of these supports.

Sex education: In the past Maynooth has run some wonderful campaigns on sex education and consent, I hope to carry on this tradition.

Aoife hynes greencampus1
Hynes, Aoife
A first year Science student, Aoife is a keen environmentalist. In secondary school she founded and ran the Green Schools group for 5 years. She hopes to go on to study Biology with the intention of working in wildlife films and conservation. Our previous Senator leaves big shoes to fill but Aoife is determined to further the good work already done, and help make this campus a greener place. Highly organised, enthusiastic and hard working, she believes she can work effectively with fellow senators and students to achieve this goal.

Masterson, Seán
Hey Everyone! My name is Seán Masterson and I’m running to be your Independent Senator. I’m a first year Marketing student and I’m currently your First Year Senator. Over the past few months I have fallen in love with our Student Union. Working with the current and past presidents on the constitutional committee has shown me the issues that our union faces. I want to be your Independent Senator so that I can help to shape how our officers are held accountable and how our union functions internally. By fixing how our union runs we can make it easier for the bigger issues to be solved, like accommodation prices and how we treat our environment. If you would like a more detailed account of my work as a senator, you can go to my Facebook page ‘Sean Masterson for Independent Senator’ and you can read my Senator Report. Thank you!.

Hey everyone! My name is Megan and I hope to become your next lgbt+ senator. I’m a first year arts student who is an activist for the lgbt+ community. I have experience working in lgbt+ youth clubs which has given me great insight into today’s main issues for lgbt+ people. My main goal would be to give a voice to people who feel like they can’t be heard. I want to educate and teach people about all areas of the lgbt+ community. If you have any questions or concerns, I have a Facebook page. Just look up “Megan Dowdall for lgbt+ senator”, send me a message and I will answer to the best of my ability.
